New coupling mechanism to strengthen railfreight

As part of a research project, the German railfreight company DB Cargo has successfully used a brand new coupling mechanism – digital automatic coupling (DAC) - to connect several freight wagons. This innovative system, tested for the first time, accelerates the combination of freight trains.

Over the next few months, twelve freight trains will be equipped with prototype couplers from four different manufacturers. After technical tests, one type of coupler will be selected. Then, a train with 24 freight wagons will run for several months through Europe.

Besides DB and DB Cargo, the project includes SBB Cargo in Switzerland, Rail Cargo Austria and wagon keepers Ermewa, GATX and VTG. (ben)
