New GRS packaging range

Southgate global has introduced a Global recycled standard (GRS) certified air cushion range to help businesses meet Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) obligations. The UK’s PPT, in place since April 2022, aims to increase recycled plastic use by taxing packaging with less than 30% recycled content. Although the tax raised over £28 million more than expected in its first ten months, Southgate global highlights weak verification systems allowing virgin plastic to be mislabelled as recycled. Rising costs and geopolitical instability have further complicated compliance.

"While it’s encouraging to see steps being taken to combat the use of virgin plastic, it’s concerning that both the infrastructure and procedures to facilitate the use of more recycled packaging aren’t always in place," said Gavin Gill, head of compliance at Southgate. (js)
