New train linking Baltic and Ukraine

The Lithuanian railfreight operator LG Cargo is launching a new container train from Klaipeda (Lithuania) to Kiev (Ukraine) in June. The weekly train will be able to carry 10,000 teu a year and cover the Lithuania–Ukraine route in 36 hours. This service has been designed to double container volumes to Kiev. The route handled 5,000 containers in 2018.

LG Cargo also plans to extend the route to Odessa in the foreseeable future. New rail links from the ice-free maritime port of Klaipeda to Ukraine’s largest maritime hub in Odessa could prove very valuable. (ben)
