New Zealand: Kiwi resumes daytime freight trains
For the first time in almost two years, daytime freight trains began running again between Blenheim and Christchurch this week, marking a milestone in the rebuild effort after the Kaikoura earthquake in New Zealand.
For the past 13 months, Kiwi Rail could only run freight trains at night to allow repair work on the road and railway line to continue throughout the day.
Although the railway has only been able to offer a restricted service since the line reopened in September 2017, it has already moved more than 480,000 t of freight.
"Running trains again both day and night means we will be better able to meet our customers’ needs as we move into the busiest period for freight," Kiwi Rail declared. (ben)
