No noisy wagons from abroad

In Germany, noise pollution caused by railfreight traffic dropped by about five decibels in 2020 compared to the previous year, as a report released by the federal railway authority shows. The reduction in rail noise is primarily due to the conversion of freight wagons to so-called whisper brakes.

The German association of freight wagon holders (VPI) demands to ban noisy wagons with grey cast iron brakes from crossing the border and entering the German network.

Private wagon owners in Germany had to invest billions to switch to low-noise rolling stock. Now the conversion to LL-blocks also significantly raises operating costs in day-to-day operation, VPI argues. (ben)
