Platooning starts for real in Spain
The major Spanish transporter Acotral and truck manufacturer Scania have started platooning on two Spanish routes. After giving drivers the requisite practical and theoretical training, a "real life" pilot test is now being carried out.
Two convoys, each with three Scania R 450 trucks, are now in service between Ribarroja and Getafe, and Valladolid and Getafe, a distance of 350 km and 200 km respectively.
The two partners will continue operating platoons on these routes until the end of April, when results will be analysed to consider extending the system to additional routes.
In platoons, the distance between HGVs is minimalised to achieve fuel-efficient and aerodynamic formations on motorways, the truck manufacturer said. (ben)
