Port of Duisburg set to test 5G

Duisport, the city of Duisburg and the University of Duisburg-Essen are applying for funding from the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia to set up a 5G test field in the inland port of Duisburg. The joint project, called '5G.Logport Duisburg', aims to develop digital logistics solutions and bring them to market. Startport, a start-up accelerator, will play a key role in this.

Startport managing director and Duisport executive Peter Trapp explained that "we think we have a good chance of winning the contract, because 5G technology isn’t widespread yet in inland ports."

Erich Staake, CEO of the Duisport Group, added that "the introduction of the 5G standard in the port will be the most important infrastructure measure in this decade. Innovative navigation solutions can also lead to a reduction in truck traffic, amongst other things."
