Port of Galveston celebrates 200 years

The Port of Galveston, TX, marks its 200th anniversary this week with two major events honouring its maritime heritage and future. Founded on 17 October 1825, when Mexico declared it a provisional port of entry, Galveston has grown from a Gulf trading post into one of the top 40 US cargo ports and the fourth-largest cruise port in the country.

Tonight’s free "Party on the Pier", presented by Royal Caribbean, will light up Pier 21 with live music, family entertainment and a 400-drone show over the harbour. Tomorrow's 200th Anniversary Gala, hosted by Carnival Cruise Line, will feature dinner, dancing and a look back at the port’s history. All proceeds will support maritime scholarships at Texas A&M University at Galveston, continuing the legacy of America’s oldest port on the Gulf Coast. (ah)
