Port of Hamburg back on growth trajectory

Germany’s largest universal port Hamburg is again on a growth path, as it handled 34.6 million t of seaborne cargo in Q1/2019, 6% more than in Q1/2018.

The throughput of general cargo (23.9 million t/+ 5.4%) and bulk cargo (10.7 million t/+ 7.5%) rose substantially in Q1/2019. Container handling rose by 6.4% to 2.3 million teu, primarily due to four liner services new to Hamburg and linking the Hanseatic City with ports in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Twelve liner services now link the Port of Hamburg directly with 29 ports in the USA, Mexico and Canada.

On top of that, feeder traffic and landside seaport-hinterland services handled 1.45 million teu, 8% more than in Q1/2018. These sectors also profited from the new container lines. Of the total of 2.3 million teu handled, 865,000 teu (+ 3.8%) – were transported by feedership to other European ports. (kd)
