Rails from Austria to smooth the way for British trains

The British infrastructure operator Network Rail is currently preparing to bid out a multi-year contract for the supply of rails. Companies that want to take part in the bidding procedure need to prove their ability to deliver long rails. DB Cargo is therefore working with Austrian rail manufacturer Voestalpine to take the 108 m long metal parts from Austria to the UK.

Voestalpine has already started to conduct test deliveries. The transports begin in Leoben Donawitz, about an hour north-west of Graz (Austria). They continue through Calais (France) and the Channel tunnel to Eastleigh (UK). The transports remain under the direction of DB Cargo for the entire journey. Regular deliveries at three-week intervals are expected to begin in April 2020. (ben)
