Russian Railways to test unmanned trains

During the International Railway Salon PRO//Motion.EXPO in Moscow last week (28.-31.8.2019), Russia’s first unmanned train was presented to the public. Russian Railways (RZD) chairman Oleg Belozyorov said it was “a major technological breakthrough”.

The ES2G Lastochka unmanned electric train can be controlled automatically, from the cockpit by a driver or from the transportation control centre by an operator. In the coming year, a series of tests in automatic mode under the control of drivers will be carried out in Russia.

In the future, unmanned technologies may be introduced on railway lines with a large volume of traffic and a small transit interval between passenger trains as well as at freight stations, according to RZD. (ben)
