South Australia aims to boost freight safety

The Barrier Highway in South Australia’s Mid North is set for a major upgrade to improve safety and freight efficiency as the Premier of Australia recently reported. Junctions at Whyte Yarcowie and Yunta will be reconstructed, widened and spray sealed to support heavy vehicles, with new lighting and barriers at Whyte Yarcowie and improved access to mining and pastoral areas near Yunta.

The project also includes a new rest area at Winnininnie and an upgraded facility at Bindarrah, featuring shelters and picnic tables. Additionally, three culverts will be upgraded to reduce flooding and accommodate larger vehicles. The AUD 62.5 million project is jointly funded by the Albanese and Malinauskas governments, with completion expected by mid-2026. (js)
