Spotlight on driver fatigue
To mark the longest day of the year tomorrow, the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF), supported by the ITF, is staging a pan-Europe 'Drivers’ Fatigue Action Day' tomorrow, 21 June. The aim is to spotlight fatigue in the freight and passenger transport sectors and call for safe rates.
ETF data shows that 60% of truck drivers regularly drive while fatigued; one in three truck drivers have fallen asleep at the wheel. Over 50% said they needed to pull over but couldn’t. ETF demands proper enforcement of EU rules, fair pay and rest, and binding safe-rate schemes.
"Fatigue is built into drivers’ working conditions," said ETF general secretary Livia Spera. A central event will be held today, 20 June, in Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany), followed by driver outreach on 21 June. (ah)
