Strong cargo growth on Brussels - Cologne axis
Cologne Bonn airport (CGN) delivered new all-time records in terms of cargo throughput and passenger traffic in 2017. The German facility processed 840,000 t of freight last year, 7% more vis-a-vis 2016. 2017 was the fourth consecutive year that both passenger and cargo traffic grew.
In nearby Belgium, Liege airport (LGG), which was founded in 1990, also set an historic record by handling 717,000 t of cargo (+8.5%) in 2017. The growth driver of all erstwhile and new freight airlines (Air Bridge Cargo and Air China Cargo) was said to be Europe’s favourable overall economic development and new business fields in the e-commerce sector.
In the year under review, Brussels airport handled 535,634 t of cargo, the highest volume in the last ten years, and 8.3% more than in 2016. All segments grew last year, but belly cargo in particular showed a sharp recovery compared to 2016 (+13.8%). Integrator services also experienced a strong 9.7% surge in 2017. (ah)
