Swiss government funds for Gateway Basel Nord
The Swiss government is set to provide the Gateway Basel Nord goods-handling project, a joint venture between Contargo, Hupac and SBB Cargo, with an investment contribution of CHF 83 million, for the construction of a large new container terminal on the compound of the former Basel Badischer Bahnhof railway shunting yard.
The means are tied, amongst other things, to the condition that the centre handles approximately 1.9 million containers in the first ten years of operations. An initial 45% (later 50%) also has to be distributed to the rest of Switzerland by rail. The new facility will be able to transfer containers to 750 m trains and will also enable bundling of goods for further inland distribution by rail. (ben)
