The lynx that lost its sense

Peta has filed a complaint with the US Department of Agriculture, urging an investigation into allegations that SmartLynx Airlines violated the Animal Welfare Act during a 44-hour flight transporting long-tailed macaques from Mauritius to Miami.

According to a whistleblower, the animals were confined in small wooden crates for more than 50 hours, with no access to water during multiple layovers. "These monkeys, who spent more time on this plane than the average American work week, suffer enough on their way to laboratories without adding thirst and dehydration," said Peta Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo.

The Lithuanian carrier’s record appears less "smart" than its name suggests, having previously faced citations for inadequate water provision and unsafe stacking of animal crates on similar flights. (ah)
