The port of Rotterdam moved sideways in 2019

The port of Rotterdam handled the same amount of freight in 2019 as the year before. Freight throughput remained practically on the same level with 469.4 million t. Following a good start in the first six months of 2019, growth in container transhipment was almost negligible during the second six months of the year.

Container throughput rose by 2.1% to 14.8 million teu, freight in containerised tonnes grew by 2.5%. While the total throughput of liquid bulk stagnated at 211.2 million t in 2019, dry bulk declined by 4% to 74.5 million t (2018: 77.6 million t). The fall in coal throughput was considerable (-14.8%). Ro-ro transhipment increased slightly in 2019 (+0.8%) despite the uncertainties surrounding Brexit.

The port achieved a net result that was 1% below the bar of 2018 with EUR 241 million (2018: EUR 254.1 million). Its turnover amounted to EUR 706.6 million in 2019 (2018: EUR 707.2 million).

Investments made by the Port of Rotterdam Authority shrank by 17% in 2019 and came to EUR 338.3 million (2018: EUR 408.1 million). (mw)
