Thessaloniki port expansion gets underway

ThPA and Metka - Tekla (PIER 6) J/V have signed a € 195.6 m contract to expand pier 6 at the port of Thessaloniki, marking its largest upgrade. The project involves extending the pier by 513 m, widening it to 306.5 m, and deepening the navigation channel to accommodate ultra large container vessels (ULCV). With a 40-month timeline, the expansion will double the port's capacity from 650,000 teu to 1.5 m teu, allowing it to serve more vessels, including those up to 24,000 teu, and strengthening its competitiveness in Southeast Europe.

The project is expected to generate significant socio-economic benefits such as increased employment, GDP growth, and improved regional connectivity. It also aims to bolster Greece's port industry and enhance national and regional trade capabilities, positioning Thessaloniki as a key Mediterranean transit hub. The development reflects a strategic milestone for Greece's logistics sector and regional economic development.
