Trieste Marine Terminal ready for fresh fruit

The Trieste Marine Terminal is prepared for the harvest season. There is now more space for reefer containers, due to the implementation of an additional power unit, and new plugs are now operational to comply with seasonal peaks of temperature-controlled cargo. The total number of plugs has been increased from 235 to currently 405.

“With this additional investment, TMT wants to respond to the reefer market’s growing demand for capacity and technology upgrades,” said Roberto Menis, chief operation officer at TMT. Rail infrastructures serving the port of Trieste have also been enhanced.

Gate 2 in the Free Zone (Punto Franco Nuovo) was recently re-opened to allow manoeuvring convoys originating or going to piers V and VI in an independent way from those entering or coming from pier VII (TMT container terminal), now using gate 4 after its reopening in 2016.

The official opening of gate 2 is part of a wider EUR 1 million project for infrastructure maintenance led by the port authority. Zeno D’Agostino, president of the authority, commented: “This innovation allows us to handle simultaneously several trains on the different terminals and to manage operations independently from one-another.” (cd)
