Trump imposes new truck tariffs

The White House has announced new import tariffs on medium- and heavy-duty trucks, parts, and buses under Section 232 of the 'trade expansion act' of 1962. Signed by President Donald Trump, the proclamation introduces a 25% tariff on imported trucks and parts, and a 10% tariff on imported buses, citing national security and support for the domestic trucking industry.

The measures target key vehicle components such as engines, transmissions, and chassis. A offset programme applies from 2025 to 2030 to encourage local manufacturing. Trucks and parts compliant with the USMCA will only be taxed on their non-U.S. content once a process is established for it. Up until then they will be fully exempt. (js)
