U-Ming adopts wind power

U-Ming marine transport has completed the installation of four rotor sails on its 325,000 dwt very large ore carrier 'Grand Pioneer'. According to its own information the Taiwanese shipowner is the first in the country to adopt the wind-assisted propulsion technology, supplied by Anemoi Marine Technologies. The 35 m tall, 5 m wide tilting sails were delivered fully assembled from Anemoi’s Yangtze River base and installed at Cosco Zhoushan shipyard. The process, completed during the vessel’s dry-dock in September, took 1.5 days to fix the sails and a further five days for testing and commissioning.

Anemoi’s team supervised the work and will accompany the vessel on its maiden voyage to Singapore to complete crew training. "The installation of Rotor Sails on Grand Pioneer marks an important step in U-Ming’s decarbonisation journey and reflects our belief that the future of global shipping must be both sustainable and competitive," said Jeff Hsu, Vice Chairman of U-Ming.
