United backs JetZero’s radical aircraft design

United Airlines has invested in aircraft start-up JetZero, backing its innovative Z4 blended wing body design that promises up to 50% lower fuel burn per passenger mile. The agreement includes a path to purchase up to 200 aircraft, pending development milestones.

The Z4 aims to seat 250 passengers and fly on conventional and sustainable fuels, with a demonstrator flight set for 2027. United Airlines Ventures sees the technology as key to lowering emissions and enhancing passenger experience.

JetZero is also supported by a USD235 million US Air Force contract to accelerate development. The aircraft is expected to fit within current airport infrastructure, offering efficiency gains without major adaptation. (ah)
