UP launches truck-competitive route

Union Pacific Railroad will launch a domestic intermodal service on 3 September, connecting Southern California’s 'Inland Empire Intermodal Terminal with Chicago’s Global 2 terminal in three days. Operating from the Inland Empire Intermodal Terminal, the service aims to be up to 20% faster than current industry options and will initially run five days a week, with capacity to expand as the company stated in a press release.

Part of Union Pacific’s Z train network, it targets time-sensitive freight with truck-competitive transit times. Executive vice-president Kenny Rocker said the offering challenges over-the-road shipping. The move expands intermodal capacity between one of the the Los Angeles based warehouse hub and the Chicago market. (js)
