USA's Utica line reactivated after twelve years

Commercial freight was shipped on the Utica line of the New York Susquehanna and Western Railroad (NYSW) for the first time in a dozen years recently, according Chenango county's industrial development agency (CCIDA).

The first train consisted of a locomotive pulling two flat cars that were carrying hollow steel beams. In 2006, after floodwaters severely damaged the line in more than twenty locations in Chenango county, NYSW suspended services. Years later the CCIDA, considering the line to be vital transport infrastructure, objected, and began laying the groundwork for a restoration project. Now the 75 km stretch has been restored. (ben)
