Volga-Dnepr Group has big plans for Leipzig

The Russia-based Volga-Dnepr Group is withdrawing from its participation in the “Strategic airlift interim solution (Salis)” that is based at Leipzig/Halle airport (Germany).

Under the terms of the programme, Volga-Dnepr supported Nato and the EU when oversized and heavy cargo had to be transported. Given the current international tension, it was reported that the airline’s AN-124 will only be used to transport goods for civilians.

However, it is highly likely that the German airport can expect to handle much more freight from the Volga-Dnepr Group. It is planning to establish another subsidiary in Germany, probably similar to Cargo Logic Air, a scheduled airline based in the UK.

Ulrich Ogiermann, the former boss of Cargolux and Qatar Airways Cargo (see P&C section), has been mandated to set up the new entity in Germany.

In addition, the Volga-Dnepr Group member, Airbridge Cargo, is searching for a second B747F hub outside its home city Moscow. (ah)
