World trade growing again

In January 2020, the container throughput index published by the German research body Rheinisch-Westfälisches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (RWI - Leibniz) and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) registered a moderate surge in world trade and container volumes.

The audited level for that month was 120.8 points, up from the unaudited earlier figures of 119.1 points. The upturn was partially due to the growth in throughput in Chinese ports.

The uptick in the ports of the Northern Europe was significant, moving from 114.8 to 117.9 points. The index is based on data from more than 83% of the 91world container ports that are continuously monitored by the ISL. The estimate for February will be published on 30 March 2021. (cd)
