Worldwide container throughput still under pressure

According to the current flash estimate, the container throughput index of the RWI – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute for Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) fell to 134.7 in April.

At the same time the March value was revised downward from 136.7 to 136.1. This indicates that the index is on a downward path. The cargo throughput in China’s ports in particular noted a marked decline after a favourable period in March.

The flash estimate for April is based on data from 47 ports that handle about 77% of the throughput that is used to compile the index. The RWI/ISL container throughput index for May will be published on 25 June 2019.

As part of the ISL’s market monitoring, the index continues to collect container handling data at 83 international ports that account for approximately 60% of the global container throughput. (kd)
