Antwerp reorganizing hinterland barge traffic
Given the importance of inland shipping to/from Antwerp’s hinterland, the Belgian port community has prepared a special action plan that aims to implement structural improvements for the inland waterway sector in the near future.
The participating players, including the affected terminals, barge operators, shipping companies, shippers, the Flemish government, the waterway operator Vlaamse Waterweg, Alfaport-Voka chamber of commerce and the Antwerp port authority, have agreed to the plan that focuses on: establishing end-to-end digitalisation, intensifying collaboration in the barge traffic system (BTS), centralizing barge planning, bundling volumes, guaranteeing a sufficient numbers of stevedores and creating more berths for barges.
Over coming weeks, work will be undertaken to initiate further projects for each of the above points. All participating CEOs will attend a summit meeting, led by the Antwerp port authority, at the end of January 2018. (kd)
