Austria investing in tracks for autonomous trains
Austria is investing some EUR 11 million in creating Europe’s first stretch of rail track that can be used for testing autonomous trains in a realistic environment.
The 25.5 km long "Open.Rail.Lab" is suitable for testing all the requisite technology developments for autonomous trains – from the first computer simulations through to test runs during normal rail operations.
The test line, which runs between Friedberg in the Austrian state of Styria and Oberwart in Burgenland, passes through eight stations, twelve railway crossings and a 524 m long tunnel. Pilot runs are due to start in June 2018. (ben)
