Bangladesh Railway ordering big locomotive batch

Bangladesh Railway is purchasing 40 new broad gauge locomotives from the US manufacturer Progress Rail. The two companies have signed an agreement covering the deal.

The rail service provider has 94 broad gauge locomotives, 55 of which now need replacing. Progress Rail will deliver the locomotives within 24 to 36 months. The investment is being funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) that already loaned Bangladesh Railway USD 360 million last year. That money was used to buy modern rolling stock, support the company's reforms and help promote a shift from road to rail.

The country's government aims to increase the railway's share of the freight transport market to 15% and to 10% in the passenger sector by 2020. (ben)
