“Be different”

Overland team with a share of success. Entrepreneurs should be creative. What if all of a firm’s employees join in too? Beat Schweighauser told Christian Doepgen about Magsped’s special profile.

What are the most important regions Magsped serves with its road transport services, Mr Schweighauser?

We’re expanding our position in the Belgian, Benelux, British and Turkish markets. Since September 2022 we’ve also operated to and from Spain and Italy.

What aspects of the Belgian market appeal most to you?

This market of few forwarders is characterised by high congestion. That’s why we work with overnight runs, several drivers per lorry, truck turnaround with goods exchanged, as well as the support of a new agent.

How do you deal with the British customs barriers?

We form a well-coordinated team with two British, owner-operated SMEs as partners, and also keep our own customs declarants constantly on the ball.

What opportunities have you discovered in Turkey?

There’s a great potential there. The trend towards near-sourcing by shippers helps us, for example, as do the overland routes available. In terms of volume, it’s our biggest market, with 10 – 15 departures a week. Exports are booming, as are imports, a traditional strength.

How does your team work?

Our recipe is to make every employee an entrepreneur. Every employee enjoys a share of our success. We mix our older colleagues’ experience and network with younger, motivated employees seeking a knowledge transfer. It’s not about hierarchy, but solely about an employee’s commitment to customers as a ‘logistics consultant’ – with their heart, soul and intelligence. We already have ten employees now.

Does this recipe work?

Absolutely! More responsibility brings opportunities for everyone. Our own programmer and good partners round off our profile.
