Better rail links between Scandinavia and Central Europe
The European Commission has approved EUR 123.5 million for the Fehmarn belt project. The scheme encompasses the construction of a 120 km long rail link from Ringsted, south of Copenhagen (Denmark) towards the future entrance to the Fehmarn belt tunnel. The EC decision has been welcomed by the Fehmarn belt business council.
The tunnel will reduce transit times between Copenhagen and Hamburg, as well as enhance links between Scandinavia and Central Europe. Work is already in progress on the rail link from Ringsted to the Fehmarn belt tunnel. Construction work on the tunnel itself is slated to begin in 2020 and finished in 2028. (ben)
