China train reaches Vienna after 9,800 km in 15 days

The Austrian service provider Rail Cargo Group has successfully operated its first rail service between Asia and Europe. The container train, which set out from Chengdu (China) and ran along the northern Silk Road, completed the around 9,800 km long journey in a mere 15 days.

The train travelled through Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine and Slovakia to Vienna in Austria. The containers were transferred from wide to standard gauge wagons at the Dobra terminal on the Ukrainian-Slovakian border.

The first China-Vienna train hauled electronic components, lighting material and household goods, among others, to the Vienna South container terminal, from where they are being conveyed to their final destinations. (ben)
