Combined transport growing in Europe

Intermodal statistics collected by the International Union of Combined Road-Rail Transport Companies (UIRR) from 39 members in 18 European countries reflect improved performances in terms of number of consignments transported using combined transport. They reached a historic high of 8.6 million teu in 2018. This constituted a nigh-on 5% increase compared to the previous year.

UIRR said that, despite this good performance, intermodal transport’s potential will not be achieved without amendments to the EU’s combined transport directive, which is meant to provide a harmonised regulatory framework for cross-border transport services, and which is crucial to Europe achieving its COP21 climate targets.
