Container throughput solid in February says Drewry

In February 2019, Drewry's global container port throughput index declined to 114 points, after reaching 131 points in January. The decrease was mainly due to the Chinese New Year which was celebrated in February and dampened activity levels.

The February 2019 index was unchanged versus February 2018, but around 9 points up on the February 2016 level of 105. After China's annual decline of 2.4%, North America - on an annual basis - was almost the same compared to February 2018. Asia (excluding China), Europe and Latin America were the regions where the port throughput index witnessed an annual increase.

The increase was much higher for Europe at 6.1% compared to 2.5% for Asia (excl. China) and Latin America (around 1%). The Drewry Container Port Throughput Indices are based on monthly throughput data for a sample of over 220 ports worldwide, representing over 75% of global volumes. The base point for the indices is January 2012 = 100. (kd)
