Dutch cities introduce environmental zones for trucks

In the Netherlands, thirteen towns have introduced environmental zones for heavy duty trucks in their city centres. These towns are Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Den Haag, Eindhoven, Breda, Den Bosch, Tilburg, Delft, Leiden, Rijswijk, Maastricht and Arnhem. In Rotterdam and Utrecht there are also environmental zones for light-duty trucks.

Only clean lorries may enter environmental zones. To be clean, diesel trucks weighing over 3,500 kg must comply with Euro 4 emission standards or higher. The penalty for non-compliance is EUR 230. In urban areas, air pollution is exceeding EU-standards for fine particles and nitrogen dioxide. (ben)
