Egypt to electrify 660 km of its rail network

Siemens has signed a USD 4.8 billion contract with Egypt’s national authority for tunnels (NAT) to deliver a comprehensive rail system that will feature the first ever high-speed, electrified main and freight rail line which will transform transportation in Egypt.

The contract signed covers the initial 660 km out of the 1,800 km rail network planned. The signatories also decided to discuss and finalise the agreements on the two other high-speed railway lines including rail infrastructure and trains, and maintenance in the coming month.

Together with Orascom Construction and The Arab Contractors, Siemens will provide its comprehensive turnkey services to design, install, commission and maintain the systems for 15 years. (ben)
