Electric freight ferry to debut on Fehmarnbelt route
Scandlines’ new all-electric freight ferry has completed its second sea trial in the Sea of Marmara (Turkey) and will soon begin its voyage to the Fehmarnbelt between Germany and Denmark. Set to enter service on the Puttgarden–Rødby route in late 2025, the vessel will offer zero direct emissions and fast charging – 12 minutes in Germany and 17 in Denmark.
With a capacity of 66 freight units and 1,200 lane metres, the ferry combines sustainable operation with high-volume efficiency. It will run on battery power for 45-minute crossings but can also operate in hybrid mode, using onboard diesel generators. Scandlines has invested EUR 80 million in the project, including charging infrastructure and a 10 MWh battery system. The ship is expected to boost capacity and sustainability on this key freight corridor between Northern and Central Europe. (ah)
