Embargos change for two landlocked countries
On 30 November 2018, the Swiss federal council amended the ordinances on measures against the Central African Republic and the Republic of South Sudan. The provisions of the arms embargo currently in place have been changed to reflect the resolutions of the UN security council. The changes take effect on 14 December.
The derogations from the current arms embargo have been amended based on UN resolutions 2399 and 2428. In particular, changes have been made to the procedure for including the responsible UN sanctions committee in the approval process.
The changes to these two ordinances are not expected to affect arms exports to the countries in question as these exports continue to be subject to the provisions of the war material act and the goods control act and their associated ordinances. (ah)
