Facelift for rail infrastructure in North Carolina
North Carolina's department of transportation (NCDOT) has awarded USD 7 million in matching grant funds to 14 short line railroads to improve their infrastructure, which plays a key role in the economy of the US state.
The funds will support the economic development and enhance the safety and reliability of rail operations. Funds have been allocated, inter alia, to Aberdeen Carolina & Western which will replace 3.2 km of worn rail and 5,000 cross ties in curves over an 8 km stretch of track, and renew a number of switches/switch ties to harden the railroad.
Atlantic & Western Railway's project to replace 6,850 track feet of rail and improve the Weller Street Crossing will also receive financial support. (ben)
