Fifth Gulf state introduces TIR

Transport is becoming more efficient in the Middle East, now that the TIR system is going live in Qatar. TIR will help speed up supply chains in Qatar, which is set to host a series of major international events in the coming years, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This will ensure secure and timely deliveries to and from the state, the International Road Union (IRU) said. Qatar became the fifth of the six member states of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (CCASG, formerly the Gulf Cooperation Council, GCC) to run TIR.

It’s the only global transit system that allows goods to be shipped from one country to another in sealed compartments that are controlled by customs via a multilateral, mutually recognised and UN-backed system. In addition to moving goods by road, TIR is also an excellent trade-facilitation tool for multimodal transport, including roll-on roll-off activities, container shipments and rail. (ben)
