Finland establishes rail route to China
Railgate Finland’s Kouvola-China express service began operations on 10 November, with the departure of the first container train from Kouvola (Finland).
The train, now en route to Xi´an (China), was launched by Kouvola Innovation Oy in cooperation with the city of Kouvola. The containers were loaded with forest industry products, among other things.
Freight train services from Europe to China are overused and hampered by a chronic shortage of containers. Thanks to new route’s short transit time, the train can also transport refrigerated goods, seasonal goods and products requiring special conditions.
The route to northwestern China via Kouvola is some 2,000 km shorter and the track gauge is similar to that used in Russia. (ben)
