Freight volume halved due to sanctions

International transport and logistics company Operail reported a freight volume of 5.2. million t in the first nine months of this year. This is 50% less than in the same period last year, the carrier said.

The decline in freight volume is due to the sanctions imposed by Estonia and the European Union on Russia and Belarus after the invasion of Ukraine, which stopped the transit of Russian fertilisers and Belarusian oil products through Estonia.

However, intra-Estonian multimodal operations have shown strong growth in the first nine months of the year: the volumes were 52% higher compared to the same period last year. (ben)
