German President supports Berlin Airlift revival

Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has become the patron of “Airlift 70 - the return of the candy bombers”, an event that commemorates the allied airlift to West Berlin.

From 10 to 17 June 2019, many original machines from four continents, with more than half of the 36 DC-3s making the challenging journey across the North Atlantic, will once again fly the old routes via Wiesbaden, Fassberg and Jagel to the capital, over the Brandenburg Gate and the historic Tempelhof airfield - where they will not be allowed to land, however.

Peter Braun, director aviation and crews of the project, which is still looking for sponsors, says: "For our 180 pilots and crew members, the president’s patronage is an unbelievable motivation and support." (ah)
