Hamburg's way out of the blues


It has not returned to pre-pandemic levels yet, but the Port of Hamburg is on the move. In the first nine months of 2021, the port's total throughput amounted to 95.8 million t, a 2.9% gain compared to the period of January to September 2020.

 

Bulk cargo grew strongly, surging 6.1% ahead at 29.7 million t. Totalling 66.1 million t, general cargo throughput was a moderate 1.6% higher than last year's period. In container handling, a total of 6.5 million teu were processed, a 2.4% increase.

 

The Port of Hamburg's special pet, pre- and post-voyage railborne container transport, performed well and set a new record mark at 2.1 million teu.

 

Forecasting the near future, the Port of Hamburg expects a total throughput of around 130 million t and 8.7 million teu in 2021. In 2020, the port reported a total cargo throughput of 8.5 million teu and 126.3 million t, down 7.6% from 136.6 million t in 2019. (sh)
