HHLA banking on sustainable energy

At the beginning of the year, the German port operator Hamburger Hafen und Logistik (HHLA) and selected partners commenced research and development work on the publicly funded Fresh project at the Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA).

The goal is to integrate the battery capacities of the automated guided container transport vehicles (AGVs) that are in use at HHLA’s terminal into Germany’s energy network as flexible storage units that contribute to the grid stability of the power supply.

The project, which is being launched with the Next power plants, must not affect terminal operations. All the around 100 AGV that are deployed for moving containers at the CTA are to be converted to fast-charging lithium-ion batteries by 2022. (kd)
