Japan supports new hub in Mombasa

A recent announcement revealed that Japan is providing support to the tune of KES 27.3 billion (USD 269.7 million) for the construction of a new industrial and commercial hub in Mombasa (Kenya).

The first phase of this special economic zone (SEZ), which is expected to alter the coastal town in terms of infrastructure and business, is scheduled to be ready by 2019.

The two countries’ governments have signed an agreement under which Kenya will receive the funds as a KES 21.36 billion long term loan and KES 5.97 billion as a grant.

The new hub, covering 1,326 ha, is a part of a master plan for the development of the Mombasa SEZ that was conceived and prepared with assistance from Japan in 2015.
