Joint Mol / Kinetics floating data centre project
The Japanese shipping line Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (Mol) has has entered into an agreement with Kinetics, a subsidiary floating power leader Karpowership, to jointly develop a floating data centre platform.
The two firms will collaborate to design, construct and deploy a floating data centre on a retrofitted vessel. The facility will be supplied with uninterrupted, dedicated power from flexible sources, including ‘Powerships’ developed by ‘Karpowership’, land-based grids, onshore solar farms and offshore wind. The partnership addresses surging demand for digital infrastructure.
The floating platform will be a rapidly-deployable alternative to land-based data centres, overcoming the challenges of power constraints, land scarcity and permit delays.
Kinetics CEO Mehmet Katmer is convinced that “by pairing mobile power generation with floating data infrastructure, we’re addressing market bottlenecks and can enable faster, cleaner and more flexible digital capacity expansion.” (gy)
