Kyrgyzstan has great potential along ‎key corridors

Kyrgyzstan can tap into the benefits of its strategic location along ‎key transport corridors between Europe and Asia. Fundamental for its success is the creation of a modern transport infrastructure network, according to a Unece study. Road haulage remains the focus of freight transport in Kyrgyzstan. Major investment is planned to improve road access routes to the Euro-Asian transport links.

Rail transport to date has suffered from a poor infrastructure, which has led to today’s railfreight volumes amounting to less than 10% of their value in 1990. Future plans to unite the network and connect it to China will facilitate the growth of rail transport, potentially by as much as 30%, according to the study. (ben)
