Longer freight trains welcomed

The UK's Campaign for Better Transport has welcomed the granting of planning permission at Redbridge, near Southampton, for new freight sidings, which will allow longer freight trains to operate. This will further reduce air pollution and road congestion locally and in the A34 corridor to the West Midlands and beyond.

The development means that the 20 daily consumer freight trains in and out of Southampton, which already remove around 1,600 HGVs off of the region's roads per day, will be capable of removing an additional 728 HGVs each day, as part of a wider scheme to allow 775 m trains out of Southampton port.
